As a “Volume 1,” this feels very much like an opening salvo rather than a complete statement. The middle section sags slightly under the weight of three very similar stories about toxic romantic partners in grimy studio apartments. While each is well-written individually, you start to crave the variety promised by the eclectic opening chapters.
