Pi realized his survival depended on keeping Richard Parker alive but at a safe distance. He built a small raft using life jackets and oars, tethering it to the lifeboat. He used a whistle and the rocking motion of the boat to train the tiger, establishing a dominance that kept the beast from attacking him. He called this "the greatest show on earth."
Pi looked at the investigators and asked, "Which story do you prefer?"
What follows is a harrowing battle of wits and wills. Pi must assert his dominance to survive while also caring for the tiger, who is his greatest threat and his only reason to live. The film jumps between the present (an older Pi telling the story to a writer) and the past, culminating in a shocking alternative version of the story that forces viewers to question: Which story do you prefer?
