While figures like gay activist Marsha P. Johnson are frequently remembered, Johnson was a self-identified trans woman and drag queen. Alongside her was Sylvia Rivera, a Latina trans woman and activist. They were on the front lines, resisting police brutality and demanding dignity. For decades, their central role was minimized in favor of a more "palatable" narrative led by white, middle-class gay men and lesbians. Recognizing this history is an act of restorative justice.
