On the way home she stopped at a 24-hour copy shop and used the printers there to make a crude, physical inventory—snapshots, transcriptions, a list of names. It felt primitive and proper to hold paper that could be carried without a password. Back in her kitchen she placed the printed list next to a teacup of lavender she’d brewed from a packet ripped open years before and had forgotten she owned. She did not open Annex 4. Not yet.
