During cleaning cycles, print head alignments, and normal printing, a small amount of ink is flushed through the nozzles to prevent clogging. This excess ink is channeled into a absorbent pad (or multiple pads) inside the printer, called the waste ink pad. Over months or years, this pad saturates.
