Set during a sweltering Florida heatwave, the film follows Ned Racine (William Hurt), a shady and not-particularly-competent lawyer. He begins a passionate affair with Matty Walker (Kathleen Turner), the wife of a wealthy businessman. Driven by lust and the promise of a new life, Ned agrees to help Matty murder her husband so they can be together and inherit his fortune. However, as the plan unfolds, Ned realizes he might be in over his head, and Matty may have secrets of her own.
