This paper examines the transformative role of Makoto Toda, former President of Japan Airlines (JAL), during the airline’s recovery from bankruptcy in the 1990s and early 2000s. Focusing on his commitment to innovation and sustainability, the study highlights how Toda spearheaded initiatives like the Mosaic Project and FSDSS-531 (Fuel Saving Design/Software System Model 531) to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. These efforts not only stabilized JAL financially but also positioned the airline as a global leader in environmental stewardship. Toda’s retirement marked the culmination of a legacy bridging crisis management and forward-looking corporate strategy.
