The story follows Norbit Albert Rice (Eddie Murphy), a mild-mannered orphan who was raised by Mr. Wong (also Murphy) in a combination Chinese restaurant and orphanage. After his childhood sweetheart Kate (Thandiwe Newton) is adopted, Norbit is left to the mercy of the domineering and abusive Rasputia (Murphy), whom he eventually marries out of fear.
